Mystery Florida Conference 2011 - Dr. Carol HendersonDr. Carol Henderson: Carol Henderson is a recognized authority in scientific evidence, law and ethics. She has presented more than 250 lectures and workshops to thousands of forensic scientists, attorneys, judges and law enforcement personnel worldwide on the topics of scientific evidence, courtroom testimony, and professional responsibility. She has lectured in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Scotland, Spain and Taiwan.

Dr. Henderson has written four books and more than 45 articles and book chapters on scientific evidence, law and ethics. Her latest book, the 5th edition of Scientific Evidence in Civil and Criminal Cases was published this year. She is an editor of the Encyclopedia of Forensic and Legal Medicine (2005), which received the Minty Prize from the British Medical Association. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Forensic Sciences, the Journal of Clinical Forensic Medicine, the Forensic Science, Medicine and Pathology Journal and Psychological Injury and the Law.

Henderson has appeared in both the popular and professional media, including Court TV, Fox National News, CBS "48 Hours" show, National Public Radio, The John Walsh Show, Montel; the American Bar Association Journal, and Lawyers Weekly USA. She is the past-president (2009) of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. She is also co-chair of the Future of Evidence Committee and vice-chair of the Scientific Evidence Committee of the American Bar Association Science and Technology Law Section and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police Forensic Committee.

Dr. Henderson received her J.D. degree from the National Law Center, George Washington University, in 1980. Prior to receiving her J.D., she worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Department of Justice Criminal Division. She began her legal career as an assistant United States attorney in Washington, D.C. She also practiced corporate litigation in a national law firm. She is presently director of the National Clearinghouse for Science, Technology and the Law at Stetson University College of Law, which is funded by the National Institute of Justice.

 

Supervisory Special Agent Stacy M. Arruda – Cyber Crimes Supervisor:  Supervisory Special Agent Stacy M. Arruda was designated a Special Agent of the FBI in 1996, and was initially assigned to the New Orleans Division where she worked Asian Organized Crime matters and later Cyber Crime matters.  In October 2003, Special Agent Arruda was promoted to the position of Supervisory Special Agent at FBI Headquarters (FBIHQ), Washington, D.C., in the Computer Intrusion Section of the Cyber Division.  There, SSA Arruda first directed FBI efforts on large-scale investigations involving Eastern European hacker groups, before transfer to the Counterterrorism Counterintelligence Computer Intrusion Unit.  Upon completing her assignment at FBIHQ, SSA Arruda was transferred to the Tampa Division as the SSA of the Cyber Crime Squad, responsible for the Cyber Crime Program which includes Computer Intrusions, Innocent Images, Internet fraud, Identity Theft and Intellectual Property Rights violations.  Ms. Arrruda has a Masters of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Florida International University and a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Florida.

 

Special Agent Dave Couvertier – FBI spokesman and Public Affairs Officer :  SA Dave Couvertier has been an FBI Special Agent for over 19-1/2 years and has served in federal law enforcement for approximately 29 years.  SA Couvertier first served the Montgomergy Alabama resident agency, investigating a variety of fraud, corruption, and institutional crimes.  In 1996, SA Couvertier was tranferred to the San Juan, Puerto Rico FBI Field Office, assigned to narco-trafficking, criminal organizations and high-profile, sensitive public corruption investigations.  Couvertier has been resident at the Tampa FBI Field Office since 2001, where he has managed investigations involving organized criminal enterprises, violent crimes, theft of government property, and as a member of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, he investigated international terrorism matters.  In February 2007, Agent Couvertier was selected as spokesman and Public Affairs Officer for the Tampa Division, which encompasses 18 counties and nine FBI offices.  During his FBI career, Agent Couvertier has been certified as a relief supervisor, hostage and crisis negotiator, general police instructor, SWAT team member and sniper/observer.  Over approximately a 13 year consecutive period, he served on three different FBI field office SWAT teams.

 

Special Agent Kurt B. Huertas – SWAT Team Leader:  SA Huertas entered into the Bureau in 1986 and has served in the New York and Tampa offices. He has conducted investigations in the following areas: counterintelligence, terrorism, narcotics, and organized crime.  He received his law degree from Cornell University and has previously served as the Principal Legal Advisor/ Chief Division Counsel in the Tampa Division.   SA Huertas has an extensive training background and has performed the duties of Principal Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Street Survival Instructor. SA Huertas is a long time SWAT Team member and the current Senior Team Leader for the Tampa FBI SWAT Team.

 

Special Agent Charlotte Braziel: SA Braziel joined the FBI in 1987, with an undergraduate degree in Public Policy and Government and Masters in Business and Criminal Justice.  SA Braziel's investigative background includes white collar crime, financial fraud, health care crime, civil rights, human trafficking and organized crime.  She has served as a senior team leader for the Tampa Field Office's Evidence Response Team (CSI Team) since 1995, is an active member of the Hazmet Team and a Defensive Tactics instructor.  SA Braziel has taught crime management and case management both domestically and abroad.  Her major case assignments inculde the World Trade Center, the Anthrax Investigation, and various terrorism investigations.
